About Us

Westfjord Power Company possesses decades of experience in harnessing hydro and geothermal energy as well as distribution and sale of electricity. The company owns and operates power plants and power stations to generate electricity, with the necessary infrastructure for electric power transmission and electricity distribution, geothermal works and central heating boilers together with the necessary distribution channels.

The company was originally founded in 1978 but Westfjord Power Company was established on the basis of legislation passed by the Icelandic Parliament in 2001.

The company operates seven hydroelectric power stations, which produce approximately 90,000 MWh per year, which is about 60 % of the power consumption of the Westfjords. Transmission of electricity in the Westfjords is comprised of 1,036 km long power lines/cables owned by the company and maintained by its employees.

The company operates a quality system that complies with the requirements of ISO 9001: 2008. The company was the first Icelandic electricity power company to operate an internal safety management system under the authority of the Icelandic Construction Authority in 1999. The company also operates an internal control system with sales meters under the authority of the Icelandic Consumer Agency.

Westfjord Power Company employees are about 70 in three geographical areas servicing the Westfjords electricity distribution and sales network covering the entire country. Head office is located in Ísafjörður town and regional offices in Hólmavík and Patreksfjörður.

Westfjord Power Company board of directors is composed of five members who are elected at an annual shareholders meeting. Westfjord Power Company Manager is the company’s chief operating officer. The company is organized into one department, oversight, and three divisions: energy, electricity and finance.
